A labor of love. Creator of "The Cumberland Collection", Robert Miller's workshop is located along the beautiful coast of Southeast Georgia known as the Golden Isles. If you were to ask him what the most enjoyable part of his job was, chances are he'll mention the time and pleasure that goes into finding and selecting the right piece of wood for his art. Once the wood has been collected, the wood is carefully sorted through to determine how it will be used to best reveal the beauty of each pieces' grain, color, and shape.
For those who are not familiar with this area, it is home to large Live oaks draped with Spanish moss, saw palmettos, tall yellow pines, Eastern Red Cedar (aromatic cedar that is great for use in closets, drawers, damp areas, etc.), sabel palms, and many other species of trees.
I have always had a strong desire to do wood turning since my first time using a lathe years ago. After purchasing my own lathe, I began turning bowls, boxes, goblets, and lighthouses from local woods such as Hickory, Pecan, Willow, Oak, Cypress, and Aromatic Cedar. I use exotic woods such as mahogany, curly maple, and purple heart. We began giving the items to friends as gifts, and soon we were getting requests. My specialty is aromatic cedar lighthouses. These lighthouses compliment any room decor and add the wonderful cedar aroma.
